Review: Treachery in Death by J. D. Robb

Eve Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are following up on a brutal, senseless crime — an elderly grocery owner killed by three stoned punks for nothing more than kicks and snacks. And for the first time, Peabody is primary detective on the case, which means she has to get used to a new level of authority and responsibility. Good thing she learned the ropes from a master like Eve.

But after rounding up the perps, Peabody stumbles upon a much trickier situation. Determined to start working out as hard as she grills suspects, she chooses to do it at the old, rarely-used gym at Central. After a grueling workout, she squeezes into one of the narrow shower stalls, happy to have the place to herself. Just after she shuts the water off, the gym door clatters open — and while she cringes inside the stall, trying not to make a sound, Peabody overhears two fellow officers, Garnet and Oberman, arguing. References are made to delivering product, and a house in the islands, and someone named Keener who’s supposed to look like an OD. It doesn’t take long for a naked and vulnerable Peabody to realize that both officers are crooked — guilty not just of corruption but of murder as well. Fortunately, the two clear out of the locker room without realizing there was a witness.

Eve Dallas may have trained Peabody well — but this is too dangerous for one person to take on alone. Now Peabody, Eve, and her husband, Roarke, must try to get the hard evidence they need to bring the dirty cops down — knowing all the while that the two have already killed to keep their secret, and are no doubt willing to do it again.

If you haven't yet started the In Death series I really don't know why. They are brilliantly written with characters you won't be able to forget. Robb creates a world that is so close to ours but not really. I'd love to live in a time where the cars fly. 

Now if you follow me you know I don't care for the same hero and heroine in each book. I'm a one and done type of reader. If I wasn't I'd read general fiction. Part of the draw to romance in the new relationship. With the In Death, it's the same relationship, just more layers. 

For some reason, I can't help myself with this series. I love me some Eve and Roarke. They are the only two that I can read about over and over. 

So in Treachery in Death Peabody takes the lead. How exciting is that? We've watched Eve train her for all these books and finally get to watch her being in charge. I really enjoyed that part of it. What was even better is when poor Peabody hears something she shouldn't and it puts her in danger. 

I think you'll really love how the characters really supported each other throughout the story. It was really them against the bad cops. You'll really enjoy how they set out to bring down the bad cops and stay alive. The few key people in Eve's life put their jobs on the line to help do that. Apparently, it's not easy going after bad cops.  

The team works so well together you begin to feel like you are part of it. This is one of those books that you sit at the edge of your seat waiting for the end. It moves very quickly compared to some of her others and still has the humor we've come to love about her writing. There is a lot more I'd love to share but you should really enjoy it first hand.  

I can't believe I've let myself get so behind on this series but since this is book 32 I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself. Hopefully, I'll get another book read this year. So, any of you read her? If so what's your favorite book? Please share with us.
