WTF Friday

This is something new we (myself along with Born to Read Books) are doing this year. It's where we ask...wtf about something that's bothering us. Fun right! So here is what I want to talk about today.

I want to talk about "Books in a Series" can they truly ever be a standalone book?

I know I can't be the only one that as seen an author write that this book can be read as a standalone even though it's part of a series.

I guess they feel because of the fact that this book story ends at the end and the hero and heroine have their HEA that it's standalone.

 Not so for me.

How when so often a character from a prior book is mentioned or something that happens in the town is mention? If I'm reading a book and they mention a prior character and the fact that they now are happy and have a child on the way why would I want to go back and read that story? I know what happens.

I know for some people this doesn't bother them but it does me. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. How do you feel about books that are "standalones" within a series?

  1. totally agree - of course you can read some series books on their own, but I don't think it's as good an experience, so it's a rare occasion where I don't start a series at the beginning

    1. I agree. Once in a while you find that standalone that works as one but most of the time I like to start at the beginning.

  2. I think it depends on the series, there are some books in series that have hardly any connection to each other. now for me personally I catch on very easily so its not a big deal for me. I really think its just safe to start from the beginning if you need that.

    1. I don't have a problem with catching on I just don't want to know about X losing a baby in the prior book because of a car accident then learn that that fact is a big part of their story. I can't say I've read to many series that are truly standalone's.

  3. I easily read standalones in a series and don't let those things bother me. I also read series out of order all the time so that kind of thing happens to me all the time. I can still read it as a standalone and not feel too lost.

    1. You are so lucky. I hate reading a series out of order and learning something that happened prior in the series. If I do read out of order I won't go back to the others. I will just keep on going.
