End of Summer Reading Picks: Rhenna Morgan

The Art of the Staycation
A Guest Post From Author Rhenna Morgan

Well, here we are. Smack dab in the middle of summer’s most torturous temperatures. (Torturous for those of us who live in the South, anyway.)

Normally this time of year, I’m eagerly packing for, or have just returned from, my usual check-your-brain-at-the-door beach vacation. You know—the all-inclusive kind with swim-up bars and palapas a stone’s throw from the ocean’s edge. Unfortunately, this summer threw me one too many curveballs and put a kink in my Mexican paradise plans.

So, this year I’m improvising and leveraging this beautiful little thing I’ve honed to a fine art over many Christmas seasons…

Now, at Christmas, my staycation consists of at least seven days spanning from Christmas Eve to the day after New Year’s, and the only productive items allowed on my schedule during that time are:

  • Baking sweets.
  • Putting up the Christmas decorations.
  • Taking back any Christmas returns. (Though, hell will freeze over before I’ll go to the mall on December 26th.)

The rest of my time is spent at home, predominately in pajamas, with a book or a remote control in reaching distance and all those sweets I’ve baked lined up on the kitchen counter.

For summer though, that kind of plan didn’t feel right. Plus, I didn’t have nearly the time off available to make my Christmas level of sloth possible. So, I decided to go for indulgence.

How?

Well, for starters, I booked a SWEET room at a local casino/resort starting the day before July 4th with a view overlooking a killer pool. One of those lagoon type arrangements with fancy chairs built into the shallow areas and rock-star level cabanas.

Really, I’m not sure why I packed as many clothes as I did for a three day stay. As nice as the pool was, most of my time was spent in a bathing suit.

Oh, and an extra bonus that comes with a swanky pool?

Yeah, be sure you pack those mirrored sunglasses if you copy my getaway so you can ogle to your heart’s content.

The other major perk to getting away from the house for a few days?

Room service.

Lots of it.

Like, I’m pretty sure my girls and I ordered at least one of everything on the blasted menu. And when you’re done, there’s no cleanup beyond hauling those trays out to the hallway. DOUBLE BONUS.

Now, since I had my kiddos with me, I couldn’t indulge in the resort’s spa, but if I’d not had minors in tow you can bet I’d have spent at least a few hours inside their quiet rooms. Nothing queues relaxation and falls squarely in the indulgent category like a fan-freaking-tastic massage. Am I right?

Of course, since we chose to straddle the Fourth of July holiday for our mini-retreat, we capped off our getaway with a birds-eye view of an amazing fireworks display. Frankly, I was a little shocked, because Mother Nature decided to play nice and gave us 75 degree weather for the show—not exactly the norm in Oklahoma in July.

So, there you go. A getaway without the hassle of airports, road trips, or even the worry of forgetting something, because you’re only a few miles from home! And when it’s all said and done, the only thing you’re on the hook for dealing with when it’s all over is the laundry you amassed while you were gone. (Note to self: Find a laundry fairy for the next trip.)

What about you? Are you a fan of the staycation? Ever stayed at a local hotel just for the change of scenery and the perks of letting someone else handle cleanup? I’ll love to hear your comments and add other ideas to my staycation playbook!
