Protecting her life will mean betraying her trust
Ainsley Hamilton has always been the responsible one of the family. As the oldest daughter of presidential candidate Buckmaster Hamilton, she’s also a potential target. For months she’s sensed someone following her. When an expedition to scout locations for a commercial takes a terrifying turn, she’s rescued by a natural-born cowboy who tempts the good girl to finally let loose.
Sawyer Nash knows just how reckless it is to fall for someone he’s gone undercover to protect. Yet masquerading as an extra on set, he starts to see beneath Ainsley’s controlled facade. And with the election—and a killer—drawing closer, Sawyer stands to lose not just his job and his life but the woman for whom he’d gladly risk both.

What’s your go-to snack when you’re writing?
Coke Zero. I made a rule about eating at my computer. When you’re writing you lose track of time – and anything you might be eating. I have a friend who had a bowl of dried bananas next to her computer. One minute it was full, the next…she realized she’d just eaten 18 bananas. That’s what I would do if I had snacks while I was writing.
What inspires your book ideas?
I live in a remote town in Montana. We don’t even have a spotlight. There are more trucks than cars here and more cows than people. So that’s what inspires my stories. When you see cowboys every day, it is pretty easy to be inspired.
How far in advance do you plan out your stories?
Seconds. Seriously. I'm a seat of the pants writer. I never know what is going to happen until I put my fingers on the keyboard. It's very exciting for me - and terrifying.
What is Flat Cowboy up to these days?
Flat cowboys are the bookmarks to my Cardwell Ranch series for Harlequin Intrigue. One of the lovely editors at Harlequin saw a bookmark and thought I should have a cowboy one like it. That started something. A reader began calling the bookmarks Flat Cowboys and another reader began to take photographs of each Flat Cowboy wherever she went. The first reader put up a site for other readers to post where they’d been with their Flat Cowboys (The Adventures of Flat Cowboy on Facebook) So yes it took off and it’s been a whole lot of fun!
How do you deal with the pressure of deadlines?
I treat writing like a real job. Except without weekends. I write every day. It keeps me in the story and makes it so much easier to pick up where I left off the day before. I also write myself little notes when I can see the next scene or two. Sometimes the deadlines get to me when a book is being difficult. But I’m pretty good at meeting them. I think the latest I’ve ever been is two weeks – and that’s after more than 70 books.
What’s next?
I will be starting a new six-book series called, GILT EDGE. I’m taking several characters from Beartooth with me, Nettie and Sheriff Curry. I think readers will love the new family and their secrets and the danger that is right out their backdoor.
Thanks for featuring B. J. for the tour!
