Book Club Thursday: Review & Giveaway

Welcome back to Book Club Thursday!

Today we are doing one of our three "Other Reviews" We each will be able to pick one book to read together and review. I picked Getting Out of Hand by Erin Nicholas. Not only will we be reviewing this book together, we will also be giving it away.

Getting Out of Hand
Sapphire Falls #1
Erin Nicholas

Sapphire Falls has few good memories for Mason Riley. So what’s he doing in the middle of the annual town Festival/class reunion eleven years after leaving town without a look back?

Letting the most popular girl in town—then and now—kiss up to him.

Mason has come a long way from the nerdy outcast Sapphire Falls remembers. His genius IQ has helped him make a name for himself with everyone from the World Health Organization to the White House. He’s also got the bank account to make the Mayor of Sapphire Falls herself—the girl who broke his heart in high school and the one who now wants him to donate to the town’s big building project—take notice.

He can’t wait to tell her no in person.

Adrianne Scott loves Sapphire Falls. The sleepy little town where her college roommate was elected Mayor has been the perfect place to escape the fast-paced, high stress sales job she had in Chicago. She’s happy, healthy and the new project means her dream candy shop can now become a reality. Everything is good in her quiet life. Until Mason Riley comes home.

Mason sure doesn’t look—or kiss—like a socially awkward geek. In fact, he makes Adrianne’s heart pound like nothing she’s ever experienced. Which means she needs to stay far away from him.

A great plan, until her friends inform her that Mason’s donation to the project is dependent on keeping him away from the Mayor while he’s in town.

Now all Adrianne has to do is keep Mason busy, distracted and feeling good about—and generous toward— his hometown… oh, and avoid falling for the world-saving, nerd-turned-hot-guy in the process.

I really love trying out new authors. In the back of my mind I know that I really don't have either the room or the time to add new authors to my ever growing list, but I still do it.

Sometimes it works out for me and other times I just can't seem to get into them. It happens, doesn't mean that the book isn't good to others, it just wasn't good for me.

Unfortunately, Getting Out of Hand is one of those books. I just for the life of me couldn't get into it. But since it was for our Book Club Thursday I had to try my best to read it. Believe me when I say, it was very painful.

The whole book had a sorta chick lit vibe to it. I'm really not into that type of book. I never felt that Mason and Adrianne had a truly deep feelings for each other. It just seem superficial, all about the sex.

Personally I needed something more.

Just because I've mentioned some things that I didn't like about the story there is a few things that I did. I really love the small-town feel of the book. I'm a big fan of small-town books. I also liked Mason. He appealed to me.

Since this is the first book in the series I do wonder if the writing and stories get better as the author gets more into her world but to be honest I won't be rushing out to read the next one.

If you've read Getting Out of Hand or anything else by Erin Nicholas I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for visiting and happy reading!

  1. Well said! I'm glad it wasn't me. I was worried when I saw all the positive reviews and thought I was missing something.

    1. I haven't yet read anyone else's review. I usually don't until after my review is posted. I will be checking now.

  2. I liked Mason and I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite of the series. I was thinking about it after your review and we can talk about it soon.
