Dorian Blackwell, the Blackheart of Ben More, is a ruthless villain. Scarred and hard-hearted, Dorian is one of Victorian London's wealthiest, most influential men who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on those who've wronged him...and will fight to the death to seize what he wants. The lovely, still innocent widow Farah Leigh Mackenzie is no exception-and soon Dorian whisks the beautiful lass away to his sanctuary in the wild Highlands...

But Farah is no one's puppet. She possesses a powerful secret-one that threatens her very life. When being held captive by Dorian proves to be the only way to keep Farah safe from those who would see her dead, Dorian makes Farah a scandalous proposition: marry him for protection in exchange for using her secret to help him exact revenge on his enemies. But what the Blackheart of Ben More never could have imagined is that Farah has terms of her own, igniting a tempestuous desire that consumes them both. Could it be that the woman he captured is the only one who can touch the black heart he'd long thought dead?

We picked The Highwayman for my monthly book club. We are always trying to find new to us authors to read. You never know when you'll find someone you love to read.

I'm so glad we did try someone new. We all very much enjoyed the story and had a lively conversation about it. It was enjoyable hearing everyone's thoughts on the story.

Since this is a new author for me I wasn't sure what to except from her. I'm very picky about my historical. I need a good story, plain and simple. Nothing worse then you wanting to characters to stay in the dark-ages.

I really liked the idea of the story. Two young kids counting on each other in a very bad time. The story worked, at least it did until you got to the time that they are adults. Then...

I think that's the only unhappy part of this story for me. The lies on the part of Dorian. I wasn't sure why it had to go on for so long. In the beginning, I got it, but almost to the end of the book? Not so much. I even enjoyed the ending of the book when Dorian helps Farah deal with her past.

Not everyone in book club thought that part of the story was necessary. As you can see I didn't agree.

As a whole the story is good and I enjoyed it enough to read the next story in the series. This was a good pick for our book club and I'm happy we did. I'd love to say more about the story but I feel I'd ruin it for you.

If you've read The Highwayman or anything else by Kerrigan Byrne I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for visiting and happy reading!

  1. Love all 3 books in the series!!! One of my favorite historical authors now

  2. oh I just LOVED this book, so dang good. And I liked books two and three. Byrne is a refreshing author for HR, since she tackles tough issues and I like the more drama and emotion she puts in. I really loved seeing these two reconnect again.

    1. I liked them getting together again too. In a way it was so sweet. Gives you hope.
