Love Between the Covers
A Documentary Film
Written, Produced & Directed by: Laurie Kahn
Releasing July 12th, 2016
Distributed by: The Orchard

Love stories are universal. Love stories are powerful.  And so are the women who write them.

Love Between the Covers is the fascinating story of the vast, funny, and savvy female community that has built a powerhouse industry sharing love stories.  Romance fiction is sold in 34 languages on six continents, and the genre grosses more than a billion dollars a year -- outselling mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined.  Yet the millions of voracious women (and sometimes men) who read, write, and love romance novels have remained oddly invisible. Until now.

For three years, we follow the lives of five very diverse published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love—while empowering others to do the same. Romance authors have built a fandom unlike all others, a global sisterhood where authors know their readers personally and help them become writers themselves. During the three years we’ve been shooting Love Between the Covers, we have witnessed the biggest power shift that has taken place in the publishing industry over the last 200 years. And it’s the romance authors who are on the front lines, pioneering new ways to survive and build communities in this rapidly changing environment.

I was so honored to be able to watch and review Love Between the Covers by Laurie Kahn! Reading romances are a huge part of my life.

But my story didn't start with reading...

As a kid I can remember not caring for reading. I thought so often that children books were silly. How did I know that it was me and not the books? I only learn that fact when my aunt handed me my first adult fiction book. Most likely I was was to young to read it but I didn't care. I loved it and wanted more.

Around the time of jr high my mom brought home bags ( we are talking maybe 7) of Harlequin romance from a co-work. My mom didn't really read romance but I think she didn't want to hurt the ladies feelings by refusing them.

It turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to me (oh wait, having my daughter might be the best, you never know when she's reading my blog so I have to add this part. Yep, my daughter is the best part of my life, reading romance is the second)

I've gone from reading romance, to selling them for over 15 years to then blogging about them. Like I've said, romance books are a huge part of my life. And because of this I was so excited to watch Love Between the Covers.

I'll be honest here, I watched it with a tears in my eyes. I could relate to so much of what the authors and readers are feeling. The HEA community is a tight one. One of the best things about being a bookseller and a blogger is the ability to be able to talk about the books I love with people who get it.

Love Between the Covers is about an hour and a half long and I found it very easy to watch on the computer. I love how the story jumps from author to reader to a professor, and back again. You really need to pay attention to who's who.

I always thought I was very much in touch with the romance community but after watching Love Between the Covers I found that I had so much more to learn. It really brings you closer to your favorite author when you can feel like you've shared a part of their lives.

I am glad to see that this movie brings to light how often romance writers or readers and thought of a second class citizen by those who read non-fictions or general fiction. I also learn that why should I care what others think? We rock!!!!

I think you'll really enjoy the interviews with some of your favorite authors. And it was pretty cool learning some facts about the authors we love and read.

As I write this I'm thinking to myself that I really should watch it again. I know I missed stuff and I really did enjoy it the first time. I'd love more documentaries like this. Not only does Love Between the Covers bring awareness to the plights of the romance authors, it also shows you the ways the romance communities come together to celebrate their love of romance books.

Do yourself a favor and make sure to add Love Between the Covers to you calendar. I'm sure you'll like it!

  4. How neat! This is the first time I've heard of this. I came to romance and reading in general WAY late in my mid-20s. I hated it before then. I just did not appreciate being told what to read and when during school years. lol
