Sweet, Texas #5
By: Candis Terry
Releasing July 28th, 2015
Candis Terry returns to Sweet, Texas for the last time when former Marine Jake Wilder discovers how truly sweet love can be.
When the one you’ve always wanted
At sixteen, Annabelle Morgan hoped her crush on Jake Wilder was just a passing phase. Now she’s twenty-nine and nothing has changed except Jake. The once-carefree marine has come home with a giant chip on his shoulder. He insists a single mom like Annie deserves more than he can offer. Yet no matter how gruff his gorgeous exterior may be, Jake s toe-curling kisses convince her that this attraction is definitely mutual.
Becomes the one who wants you back
Butting heads with feisty Annie was always a thrill. Add other body parts to the mix, and Jake is in serious trouble. He can’t be a forever-and-family guy and Annie s not a friends-with-benefits kind of woman. But love has a way of changing the best-laid plans, and surrender has never been so tempting.
The outcome is truly sweet.
Across the rocks and sand, flashes lit up the ridgeline. Jake again scoped the ridge and spotted a new cluster of insurgents in the bushes below. Any minute the new arrivals would engage and he and his men would be in a damned dogfight.
In Afghanistan the terrain was as much an enemy as anything else. They had to get to a safer location. Because sure as shit, these puny ass rocks weren’t going to protect them for long.
He grabbed his radio again and pushed out a call for backup. Not knowing if his request had been received, he ran the options he’d learned in training through his head. The only way to get everyone back home was to keep fighting. He’d promised Eli’s pregnant wife he’d get her husband home in one piece. Which left Jake no choice but to retreat. In a split-second decision, as a mortar rocketed over their heads and exploded too close for comfort, he barked out the order to move.
Lifting their rifles, they fired as a safety cover and sprinted toward the larger outcropping of boulders to the south—away from the contact—and back in the direction from which they’d come. Private First Class Lieberman was the first to be hit. He went down like a stone. The silence and stillness from the young Private sent a chill through Jake’s heart. As he snapped out the order to keep going, he planned to grab Lieberman on the way to shelter.
Eli got to Lieberman first. He lowered his rifle and bent to grab the Private by the vest. An RPG flew over their heads and detonated. Shrapnel flew, imbedding in rock, skin, bones, and worse.
Jake flinched when the flash exploded. When he opened his eyes both Private Lieberman and Eli were on the ground. Bodies torn and bleeding. Both still as death.
The sounds of war rushed at Jake and time stopped.
A chill sliced up Jake’s spine. For a second he could hear nothing but the pounding of his own heart. Then it all charged back like a speeding train. He looked at the bodies strewn about the sand. He couldn’t hit pause or rewind. This shit was real.
No man left behind.
While bullets and mortars flew and shrapnel dug into the soles of his boots and feet, Jake ran to the fallen men and dragged them behind the outcropping of boulders.
Crouched behind the rocks, Sergeant Bagley looked down. “Lieutenant, I don’t think—”
“Good. Don’t think. Shoot.” Jake looked down to where his brothers-in-arms and in all ways that mattered except blood lay looking up at him through sightless eyes.
Eli was dead.
Lieberman was dead.
Candis Terry was born and raised near the sunny beaches of Southern California and now makes her home on an Idaho farm. She’s experienced life in such diverse ways as working in a Hollywood recording studio to chasing down wayward steers. Only one thing has remained the same: her passion for writing stories about relationships, the push and pull in the search for love, and the security one finds in their own happily ever after.
I love her books because I always find them to be well-written with characters that you'd love to get to know. The story lines are always believable and when the books end you're happy you were able to visit.
I'm slightly sad to see this series end. I really loved it. The Wilder boys always leave me laughing a time or two. They are great bunch of guys with a mom that you can't help but wishing was yours. As the series went from book to book you become more invested with the Wilder family and because of that it's going to be tough to move on.
But move on we will, until then lets talk about Jake & Annie! (do you think she named the character after me? A girl can dream! ;) )
Poor Jake, he really went through so much while he was away. His last mission will cause him to lose someone close to him and send him home.
He will have to work through all the mess in his head, plus deal with a heart that always wants him to think of new beginnings. I loved how he and Annie played off of each other. They couldn't have gotten a better match. Annie helps him move on from the darkness inside of him. She helps him heal and grow.
And he helps her feel smart, beautiful and sexy. All the things her loser ex took from her as he tried to suck the life out of her. We've all had one of them.
Let's not forget the humor, this book is full of it. I'm really going to miss the people of Sweet Texas!
Now I haven't forgotten my statement about the "love and hate" you've been very patient about waiting for me to finish this statement and I'm glad you waited around (fess up, you wanted to know where I was going with this) for my "hate" part. Well...here is it....everyone one of her books cause me to cry. Not that pretty cry that some of you can do, no... the red faced kind.
I can't help it. They are so touching, and Truly Sweet is one of the worse. Something happens that will blow your mind, but I can't tell you what, (I know, you want to kill me) read the book, hell, read the whole series!
For those who have read the series, or if you just want to talk about it, give a shout out! Happy reading!
