Review: The Closer You Come by Gena Showalter

The Closer You Come by Gena Showalter

Tortured by a violent past, ex-con Jase Hollister is looking to start over in a small town. The rugged bachelor suffering from PTSD longs for peace and quiet, always keeping his women at a distance—and his heart encased in stone.

Brook Lynn Dillon is a down on her luck waitress determined to avoid the man every woman in town wants—including her sister. The last thing she needs is his kind of trouble. But his every glance makes her burn…and her resistance is melting fast.

My thoughts....

When I think of Gena Showalter I don't often think of contemporary romance. She's a wonderful paranormal author and I've enjoyed both her Atlantis and Lords of the Underworld Series. If you haven't yet read them, you don't know what you are missing. But like I said, contemporary and Showalter aren't two things I'd put together.

Of course I'm always happy to be proven wrong.

Not that I thought that at first when I started to read The Closer you Come. I already read, The One You Want so I had a feel for the way this series was going and who the characters were. Because it was a short novella I really only got to know the main characters with glimpses of the others. I didn't go in blind but also wasn't prepared either.

Because I'm a huge romance reader I'm very picky about what's in my books, or I should say, somewhat picky. I don't mind murder and mayhem, but hate cheaters. Now, let me be blunt, no one cheated in this book, but the opening chapters are kind of rough to read.

Let me explain...Jase has sex with Brooke Lynn's sister, Jessie Kay (don't you just love their names) then feels a attraction to Brooke Lynn. I know, it's some what confusing. You'll understand more when you read it for yourself. Torturing you all makes my day.

Now, I happen to like Jase and Brooke Lynn together. They work if that makes sense. They fit together and complete what the other is missing in their lives.

You are going to find that The Closer You Come is so full of layers. Just when you think you have everything figured out...Showalter hits you with something else. You ride a roller coaster of ups and downs.

I will tell you that at times you won't like whats going on in the book and that's okay, just don't be so quick to give up on it. Remember the layers.

You will find that The Closer You Come is written with the same humor that are in so many of Showalter's stories. Poor Brooke Lynn gets fired a lot from being Jase's assistant. You'll have to read the book to know why. Believe me, it's very funny.

After reading this I can't wait to read the next book in the series, The Hotter You Burn with is out on July 28th! I would love to hear your thoughts on The Closer You Come if you've read it. Happy reading!

  1. Good review. I didn't much care for that sister thing, but like you said, layers. I really liked Jase after that and I liked them as a couple. Can't wait for the next book.

    1. Me either. I did like how he kept firing her until he ate something she cooked, so funny.
